![]() Marguerite is a go-getting young woman and this is a fun, intriguing read. I’m not much of a sci-fi fan, so I was surprised when I found myself quite addicted to this story. With the help of another intern, she jumps dimensions to find and kill Paul Markov. To make matters worse, Paul has taken the firebird and nicked off into another dimension. His murder of Marguerite’s father is an unexpected and horrible betrayal. Paul Markov is an intern who worked for Marguerite’s parents for years and is very dedicated to the Caines’ work. Someone had tampered with the brakes and that someone is very close to the Caine family. The discovery and creation of the firebird is cause for celebration, but celebrations are cut short when Marguerite’s father is killed in a car crash. Now, a decade later, Marks’ sentence has finally come to a close, and he is released from prison. The premise is as follows: ten years ago, then-college student Oliver Marks was arrested and convicted for murder, in part thanks to the work of Detective Colburne. It is, at its core, a character-driven story that deftly explores the topic of life imitating art. ![]() Rio is a dark, Shakespeare-laden thriller that utilizes the Bard’s work as a backdrop for intricate character development and complex thematic exploration. The connection, from a writerly standpoint, is deeper than that-their work, nearly all of it, is set in "their" state. What makes authors like these inextricably associated with a particular state is not simply the matter of their having been born there or choosing to live there. And what reader can think of Washington State without contending with the sparkle-vampire yarns of Stephanie Meyer? Illinois can lay claim to William Maxwell, Sandra Cisneros, and Adam Langer, among numerous others. Rural Pennsylvania is the playground of the much-heralded (and occasionally maligned) John Updike, and when many bibliophiles think of New Jersey, they also think of Richard Ford's series of novels featuring recurring Everyman character Frank Bascombe. The state of Maine is gifted with Pulitzer winner Richard Russo and horror icon Stephen King. Mississippi has William Faulkner and his incomparable (fictional) Yoknapatawpha County and Missouri can lay claim to Mark Twain. ![]() |
